SIMON McCOUAIG

Simon served with The Gloucestershire Regiment (The Glosters) and latterly with the Royal Artillery in a G4 support role for over 21 years, before finally retiring in 2020 having completed 35 year’s service with the army.

During his early army career he dabbled with sketching and after meeting and marrying his army pen pal who also enjoyed art, his work started to develop as he taught himself how to draw and paint military subject’s using his love of history and militaria to bring life and detail to his work.

Both Simon and his wife discovered the SAA and all it offers online earlier this year and found the well established group very welcoming and wished that they’d known about the courses during lockdown when online art classes were quite a new thing. Robins tuition and guidance really helps to focus the mind and the weekly few hours pass far too quickly!

Simon now specialises in portraiture and military figurative art and is completely self taught. He works mainly to commission using either oils, gouache, pen/pencil or artist’s crayon. He has won prizes at open exhibitions in London and has illustrated 12 books for a famous military publisher. Simon’s commissioned works are in museums, military Messes and homes all over the world and he is the Artist in Residence of The Soldiers of Gloucestershire museum.

He works to commission only and can be contacted on simonmccouaig@gmail.com
